Is Patriotism Keeping Americans —Including Even Left-Leaning Folks — From Realizing They’re F**ked?
Because of Trump + the Immunity Ruling, Will America be Different Enough From Germany During the Nazi Period?
I don’t know how many times now I’ve heard it. Left-leaning folks say they have a great deal of hope that the United States won’t turn into a Nazi-like country. They say that as we talk about U.S. President Donald Trump being in power again. And the Supreme Court ruling in July giving him absolute immunity for core constitutional acts and presumed immunity as long as he can say he was officially acting as president. Some have even wondered if things will be just fine.
Is their patriotic bias keeping them from seeing reality — are they thinking that the U.S. is so special that it won’t be like Nazi Germany?
‘It won’t happen to us!’

I’m patriotic. I believe that America is as awesome as any country in the world. Where it doesn’t care enough for its people, it makes up for in the opportunities it provides. Its heritage in terms of rebellion is also commendable.
But the Supreme Court immunity decision and election have happened. Left-leaning folks, to use a bad term for it, “lost” — the resistance efforts that sprung up in the 2010s couldn’t prevent America’s political and legal circumstances now. Though I should add that at least in Utah, the Trump resistance, at least initially, wasn’t political. (I reported on the Trump resistance movement in Utah starting in spring 2017.)
I say this as someone who in Dec. 2016, the month after his first election, watched him talk. I had the full intent to get behind him if I could. I figured that hearing from him directly rather than through a media filter could change my perspective.
I couldn’t get behind him.
